As the number of mass killings is risings on our campuses, there has been a debate concerning whether students should be allowed to carry handguns into schools. Several states are considering legislation that will are students from having guns while on campus premises. Notably, the principal gun-handling regulations in many states are still allowing students to carry concealed weapons. In order to end the menace of mass killing in the campuses, several states are considering the prohibition of gun handling within campuses. These tight restrictions are aimed at ensuring no cases of mass murder perpetrated by students occur. Schuppe (2016), while reporting for NBC News, noted that having many guns in schools would lead to increased cases of mass shootings.
One of the significant aspects arising from the rise of students and youths engaging in the mass shooting was the regulation of gun handling by minors. Across the United States, there are about eight states, according to a report published in 2015, that allow the handling of guns on the premises of universities and colleges. The argument by these states is that allowing students to have guns while in school will decrease cases of preventable crimes. Most of the criminals will know that they can e confronted by students with guns, and hence decrease the chances of committing a crime. Hutchens and Melear (2017) also argued that more colleges are giving students the leeway to possess guns while within the campus environment. However, this trend is dangerous because it has the potential to increase crime rates. Most students lack poor judgment and may use weapons to intimidate and bully other students. Additionally, university students can initiate crime groups where they engage in violent robberies rape and killing of other students (Hutchens and Melear).
While the states allowing handling of guns believe that there is potential for reducing crimes, the potential for harm and rising crimes are higher. There is no basis for students to be allowed to have guns within the school premises because they are usually there to learn.
