1] Explain what the authors mean by the “do it yourself” principle in They Say/I Say Chapter 8. Then, briefly describe each of the four strategies for connecting ideas described in the chapter.
The ‘do it yourself’ strategy allows the writer to make connections that are clear so that readers do not guess what the writer is trying to say. The four strategies are :(1) using transition terms; (2) adding pointing terms; (3) developing set of key terms and phrases for each text one writes and; (4) repeating oneself, but with a difference (108). Typically, transition words are used at the beginning of sentences and signal where the text is going either in the same or different direction. The pointing words highlight a concept that has been stated in the previous sentence and should be used properly to avid vagueness, such words are: this, these, that and those. A set of key terms and phrases are developed and used repeatedly and these recurring words/ phrases provide an idea of the writer’s topic. Repeating oneself, but with a difference simply means that one can repeat the main idea while restating to avoid redundancy and repetitiveness and is better than jumping from one idea to another in a paragraph.
