Literary Analysis
Understanding the differences between literary works is essential for the reader. It allows him to be able to understand how the different works of art relate to one another in relation to the different internal (i.e., plot) and external (i.e., social context) that affects the story. In this article, I would try to understand how 'death' as a theme, is different or similar in the stories Bright Star and The Death of Tennyson. In order to understand this, an analysis of the social context that exists during the creation of these works would be analyzed in greater detail. All in all, I believe that by contrasting these two pieces in light of the external circumstances that preceded them, a deeper appreciation of their meanings could be gleaned.
Thematic Contrast
One of the main differences between these two novels is their focus on how the narrator is viewing death. On the one hand, Keats' poem entitled Bright Star shows the fear of death and a love for eternity in light of the author's love for the subject of the poem CITATION Keand \l 1033 (Keats). Looking at its main theme, the reader is made aware that the author's undying love for the subject of the poem is 'unchanging and constant', which evokes the idea of eternity. In order to emphasize his emotions, the narrator creates a partial metaphor wherein he alludes his feelings to the idea of a bright star, yet says that unlike such object he wants to spend the eternity in the arms of his lover. Nevertheless, as the poem reaches its conclusion, the narrator points out the inherent nature of humans to die, which suggests the impossibility of his dreams.
Looking deeper into the poem's theme and structure, it could be seen that Keats' poem is very much similar to those created during the period of romanticism. This literary period focuses on the ideas of inspiration, passion, and the individual's primacy, which evokes strong emotions. In Keats' poem, these themes are very apparent as the narrator declares his undying love for the subject, with the use of emotionally-strong descriptions.
