Should cell phones be banned in the classroom
Use of cell phones in schools is one of the common issues discussed by school boards; the discussion has elicited debate among parents and teachers not only in the US but in many countries across the globe. New technologies like mobile phones are typically known to improve efficiency, but when such technology becomes flexible, it can become disruptive and distractive. That is why some parents support the use of cell phones in school. Other parents oppose the idea citing many reasons.
Mobile phone companies have invented different feature designed to aid students during the learning process. Despite the fact that use of cell phones in schools can positively impact on students learning the process, most students misuse these gadgets causing distraction and disruption during learning.
Why cell phones should be banned in the classroom
In most affluent schools, students own cell phones and are likely to use them in class causing disruption. Students frequently walk in and out of class to receive calls. Students’ movement in and out of class to receive calls causes unnecessary disruption during the learning process. Teachers using mobile phones in the classroom can distract teaching when they receive a message that needs urgent reply (Green Garage Blog 2).
Students should not use cell phones in classrooms because it is a sign of being disrespectful to teachers and the learning process. For example, loud ringing and funny ringtones can disrupt learning when the phones are not switched off during class hours. Most teachers complain that disruption during class hours is mostly due to student's phones ringing (Clarence, and Kritsonis 5).
Despite the fact that additional features like short messaging services (SMS), emails, camera, and multimedia messaging can aid students, most students tend to misuse these features. Some of the common problems witnessed in schools include cyber bullying on social platforms like Facebook and insults that eventually causes fights, depression and suicide among the teenage students (Notquitesoancient 2). Misuse of cell phones in the classroom is common among teenagers; some students take photos of others in bathrooms and sex-text to other classmates causing fights in school. Sending sex text message is inappropriate and is one of the examples of sexual harassment and bullying that should not be encouraged within the learning institutions (Martinko 1).
Research findings reveal that 40 percent of the student has experience cyber bullying while 30 percent of teenagers have been bullied or sexually harassed through cell phones. Sadly, statistics also reveals that repeated bullying accounts for 10 percent of suicides cases among teenagers (Clarence, and Kritsonis 6).
It is a well-known fact that meaningful learning can only occur in the learning environment free from any disruption, disruption caused by cell phones limits effective communication between teachers and students (Clarence, and Kritsonis 6).
Theft cases and indiscipline cases are high within learning institutions because students own expensive cell phones like Smartphones which are valuable product for thieves. In addition, teachers constantly discipline students for using mobile phones in classrooms instead of focusing on teaching. Teachers struggle to maintain order at the same time impart knowledge on students. Banning cell phones in classrooms would minimize distraction, indiscipline cases and also improve learning among students (Martinko 1). Students lose concentration because they are busy using their phones in class instead of concentrating on learning, such students report poor grades mostly blamed on teachers. Teachers frequently complain that they can do little to prevent student from using cell phones in class more so in colleges and high school (Green Garage Blog 1).
Research shows that teenage students are more susceptible to addiction because of regular use of cell phones is an addiction that threatens student's academic performance and their future careers. Another reason why cell phones should be banned is the fact that cell phones affect retention of knowledge (Notquitesoancient 2).Teenagers have become addicted to cell phones; research indicates that such student’s rate of knowledge retention tends to be low because most of their time their minds are preoccupied with non-educational processes (Green Garage Blog 1).
Technology has negatively impacted on learning institutions; exam cheating is associated with mobile phones hence some students gain unfair advantage over others who use fair means. Students who cheat in their final exams are ill-equipped to fit in their future work environment, since these students passed exams using unjust means they are not likely to make a meaningful contribution at work (Notquitesoancient 2).
Schools have resorted to banning cell phones during school hours as a result; students are more disciplined with positive school culture being witnessed in schools. Banning cell phones and other electronic devices have yielded positive results. Banning electronic devices within the school premises by implementing tough policies including confiscating these gadgets and calling parents to pick them on behalf of students is one of the strategies adopted by school administrators, however, not all parents are cooperating(Kurtus 13). Banning cell phones in school enable teachers to complete their lesson without any unnecessary disruption or having to discipline any student for using cell phones in class (Clarence, and Kritsonis 6).
Parents argue that cell phones are necessary especially fo...
