Salifu CWR1A Section 024 Reflective Essay 29 July 2023 Honing My Writing and Reading Skills: A Metamorphosis The CW R1A course, which has necessarily concentrated on developing reading and writing skills, has been a passage of discovery in my academic experience. Being a seminar course, it focused on active participation, reading, analysis, and writing, including tasks and assignments. To be more precise, I could only quickly browse and nondescriptively read before enrolling in CW R1A. Although I am from a home country where English is spoken, still, I have just migrated in this country for _____ years. Because of this, my eloquence is not as accurate as natural speakers, and my written vocabulary was not that broad. My English was limited, and I had a heavy foreign accent half the time and needed help with the first language slippage. There are many words in my native language that do not have English counterparts; thus, when I read texts in my home language, I fully understand what I am reading. Learning English meant I had to put real effort into comprehending the language and speaking correctly. I have realized massive enhancements in the display of my skills through this course. This will involve reflecting on experiences of reading and writing over the course, which will demonstrate areas of development and strengths as well as areas of difficulty and improvement. Hence, for the past ten weeks, our class has focused on “Fandom,” including texts, films, and group discussions. The approach to the course, where we were given individual tasks and tasks that were solved in groups, allowed us to work on our reading and writing skills, focusing on their improvement with feedback and revisions. Thus, at the beginning of the course, my goals were to improve my analytical and writing skills to be a more confident and polished writer by the end of the term. I struggled and encountered many problems during this course, mainly because everything was condensed into a ten-week session. The workload to be covered appeared to be rigorous, and the requirement of presenting work with no errors made me uncomfortable. Reading and writing as a student begins with prejudice and fear for one's ability to execute the task at hand. Every assignment was a challenge, and the ability to think critically about the texts we read was out of the question. Another potential problem I worried about with the choice of the overarching theme of “Fandom” was my somewhat limited ability to get fully immersed in the subject matter due to my lack of direct connections to any fan group. This contributed to my concern over being able to participate in class discussions and writing meaningfully.
