An interesting piece of history that I picked up from the week 3 reading is the large number of patents filed for artificial refrigeration. John Gorrie's idea about artificial refrigeration was dismissed by rivals who called his invention a "toy" (45). I was interested in why Gorrie died poor, yet he was behind a crucial creation when many people and business were adopting new technologies. Several years later, the invention began a popular idea. The popularity is attributed to "multiple inventions" where specific scientific discoveries and inventions occur in clusters, whereby dispersed investigators come to the same finding independently at the same time.
