Option A: Consequentialism and Kantian Ethics Student’s Name Institution Course Number and Name Instructor’s Name Date Option A: Consequentialism and Kantian Ethics Two major ethical theories that can help one arrive at an ethical decision are consequentialism and Kantian ethics. These two theories contrast significantly with one another in the sense that consequentialism looks at the consequence of an action as the basis for deciding what is right or wrong while Kantian ethics is concerned with doing the right thing regardless of the consequences. An important concept in Kantian ethics is what is referred to as Categorical Imperative, which is a principle that postulates that human actions should be in such a way that they can become universal law. This means that our conduct should be capable of being absolute for everyone. On the other hand, consequentialism is not concerned with whether the action in itself is right or wrong but rather whether its questions yield the greatest consequences or happiness for the greatest number of people. I think Kantian ethics is right or better than consequentialism because it espouses respect for humanity, provides a clear criterion for making decisions, and pays attention to intentions. One clear aspect of Kantian ethics that makes it right is respect for humanity. Kant’s emphasis on duty means that even if you are alone, your rights can be respected. One can deduce that Kantian ethics supports individual human rights as opposed to the interest of larger groups. From Kantian ethics, one can be sure that the interest of the larger group cannot trump one’s individual rights. In this sense, I believe Kantian ethics are integral in the protection of the individual, which fosters respect for humanity. While consequentialism regards humanity as a means to an end, Kantian ethics treats humanity as the end. The respect of humanity and human rights in Kantian ethics makes it more appealing and morally sound than consequentialism. As rational beings, Kant believed we could develop a moral system characterized by laws that we would all obey. Kant’s belief that human beings are capable of behaving rationally implies that he had great respect for humanity.
