Parents Should Stop Robbing Their Children’s Adulthood
In the 21st century, things have changed, and young people have become over-dependent on their parents. Young adults want their parents to make decisions for them since they cannot stand up independently. In particular, it is not right to see a freshman who cannot handle his or her problems without involving a parent. By problems, it means settling conflicts with colleagues or addressing the faculty to change class schedules. Although parents are required to nurture their children, they should not over-represent them. Children should be taught at a young age how to take the responsibilities for their actions. Parents should avoid over-representing their children since doing so hinders them from taking up their responsibilities when they grow up.
Although parents want their children to have good life experiences, they should not think on behalf of their young ones or come up with solutions to problems all the time. Young people should be nurtured to stand by themselves so that they can become responsible adults in the future. Priyanka Sharma-Sindhar’s “Being an ‘Elephant Mom’ in the Time of the Tiger Mother,” shows how parents want to be the best while bringing up their children. By tiger mom, the author means to be an ultra-strict disciplinarian (Sharma-Sindhar). These are the kinds of parents who believe that they should protect their children, nurture, and encourage them. However, they forget to leave children to do things on their own sometimes so that they can learn at a young age that decisions that people have consequences. On the contrary, an elephant mother is the one who always sides with their children. They cannot challenge their young ones to do things better since they show them that there is always another chance to try again. In that light, if a child fails in an exam, the parent stands by him or her instead of showing them that poor performance will have an adverse effect on their lives. Parents need to show their children that doing the right thing or passing an exam does not come without hard work.
Other parents are obstacles to their children's future success. Claire Cain Miller and Jonah Bromwich call such parents "snowplow parents." They keep their young one's futures obstacle-free (Miller and Bromwich). By saying obstacle-free means that these parents do the thinking all the time for their children.
