I would say the theme of Standish Lawder's Necrology is ascension into heaven. The short film shows an endless crowd rising in a building escalator. The group is seen ascending into darkness, which brings the thought that the people portrayed in the film are the dead ascending into heaven. In an old black and white, the people seen in the film staring into the space like those from the grave. The endless ascension in the dark gives the impression that these people are rising to heaven.
