Module 12 – An Analysis of the movie Parasite
Understanding the relationship between films and societal issues is important for any viewer. It allows him to have a better appreciation of the film’s lessons as well as how these messages are inscribed in both the cinematic and thematic elements of the piece. Accordingly, this article would focus on the analysis of the thematic relationship between the movie Bong Joon-ho’s 2019 movie entitled Parasite and the idea of Marks and Polan’s ‘independent transnational genre’. All in all, I believe that the movie aims to show the cultural and local realities in South Korea through the intersection between the Western and Korean cultures.
Overview of the Film
The story of the film Parasite revolves around the lives of a family of con artists who are living in the impoverished places in South Korea. Being able to have an opportunity to work for a wealth family, the son Woo-Sik Choi (Ki Woo) then made way for his family to work on the same household without the owner knowing that they are family members. However, since there are helpers (i.e., drivers and maid) who are currently working in the house, they made a scheme wherein they would be removed so that Choi’s family would take the roles. This would then lead a series of revelations that would lead to the tragedy of both the family and the owners of the house.
