Which class does the work claim to represent?
Don Santos, the grandfather to Efrain and Enrique forces the boys to go out look for food at the dump for his pig Pascual regardless of their health conditions. The story uses Marxist symbolism since Pascual is the face of exploitation in a capitalist system. Don Santos seeks his own interests and this is possible in a system that nurtures and encourages exploitation. Ribeyro represents the low class/ proletariat in the story as he highlighted the plight of the boys who suffered because their grandfather exploited them and they had few options and were unrewarded for all their troubles.
What values does it reinforce?
The story addresses the importance of fighting social injustice in a society where there is extreme poverty and desperation, and it is possible address inequalities when people work together. The two boys cooperate even when they face hardship, none endears himself to Don Santos for selfish gains and even as they went to the dump they sought to end their misery. Exploitation crea...
