Whether retirement should be made mandatory is a topic that sparks a great debate worldwide. Some professions have strict rules on retirement. For example, pilots go on a mandatory retirement by the time they reach 70 years, the same with military personnel. Hundreds of thousands of young generation graduate every year and begin searching for jobs all over the country. Mandatory retirement should, therefore, be enforced to create job opportunities for the young generation.
The older generation is more conservative, yet the world is dynamic and different advancements are emerging every year. The young generation is more active and aware of new technology compared to the old ones. Above 60 years, the older generation will likely be rigid to technological improvements and might derail the progress of a company. For example, a person who started working at the age of 26 years is likely to hold the same values at 55 years. Up to 50 percent of Africans above 70 years cannot efficiently operate a computer, yet they do not want to learn to use one because they believe it is for the young (Crisp & Ryan, 1793). This kind of conservatism is likely to affect the overall performance of a company. In such a case, the young people should be given a chance to run the company at par with technological advancement.
Young people get a promotional opportunity at the workplace when the older generation retires. The promotion also acts as motivation for performance at the workplace. In most companies, the older generation holds the managerial and administrative positions because shareholders and stakeholders consider them as experienced. It would also be disrespectful for a young person to summon a 60-year-old underperforming at work (Oude Mulders, 109). For example, in most schools, the principals are old who should probably be enjoying the retirement pension. Young people should take up such positions.
