Journal Entry on Schnitzler’s “America”
Summary of Schnitzler's "America" is a short story that started with the arrival of the author from his homeland to America where his wife lives. The people around him were hurrying and stole suspicious looks at him. He then reunites with his wife after a long time. After a little romance, her wife looks at her and laughs. "Something new," she whispers. The author says yes. The author remembers the billboard they saw a few years back with a large ship written from Liverpool to New York and from Bremen to New York. That was a true imagery that could now make him realize what it meant. He realizes it was all a dream and got shocked at how long it had been since he spoke to her wife in America.
It is not as usual as in an essay where "I" indicates the author's own position. Here, Schnitzler uses "I" to mean "America". He also quotes someone and whispers to himself, "America" to mean they had landed in a place they have been wishing to set their foot on and therefore referring to it as "America". The author is trying to mean that they look new in America and everyone is amazed.
The central conflict in the story is the Author's denial in his homeland and the new America. He says, "I am standing alone on the shore. Not about the new America am I thinking, from which I am going to have to claim the happiness that my homeland denied me – I am thinking about a different one". The text seems to favor the Americans.
