Compare and Contrast Essay
In 1961, A&P was brought to the light by John Updike. This short story gained recognition in no time and appeared in both The New Yorker and the Pigeon Feathers. Sammy, the main character of this story, seeks for his pride and identity. He works in a grocery store where three women visit on a hot summer day. Sammy finds them wearing nothing but their swimsuits, so he begins admiring their beauty and sexuality. However, the store owner gets angry at Sammy and insults him. The protagonist quits his job instantly without even thinking about how it would impact his family (Vince 2016).
In A Woman on a Roof, Doris Lessing makes the wise use of colors like white, black and scarlet to illustrate different characteristics of human beings. According to the author, color and gender play an influential role in one’s life and are often used to identify humans. All the characters in this story seem to be essential and are distinctively connected with one another. The extremity of the characters is what makes A Woman on a Roof a pleasant and readable story. Set in the 1960s of London, a young lady plans to go tanning on the roof of her house. At that time, men walking through the street showed different reactions, and it looks like they are attracted toward her beauty and physic. Stanley was recently married and is in his 20s. After seeing a young lady on the rooftop, he develops a plethora of emotions (from pissed to excited). It looks like he has a deep interest in the lady, but he assumes her wife at her place and feels ashamed (Wheeler).
