Comparison between Gandalf in ‘The Hobbit` and Ogion in ‘The Wizard of Earthsea`
Gandalf and Ogion are two fictional characters from two of the most acclaimed literary works. Gandalf is a wizard from the book ‘The Hobbit` by the author J. R. R. Tolkien, while Ogion is a wizard from the book ‘A Wizard of Earthsea` by the author Ursula K. Le Guin. Both the books are set in fantasy worlds created by the authors and both are considered to be among the finest fiction literary works. There are some similarities between the characters and the most basic similarity is that both the characters are wizards. The differences are the aspects that are given to these characters by the respective authors. This essay is about the comparison between the two characters, Gandalf and Ogion.
Gandalf has been described to be one of the last wizards in Middle-earth which is the fantasy world created by the author of ‘The Hobbit. Gandalf is very popular all over the Middle-earth and the folks of Middle-earth call him with different names in accordance with the characteristics he is famous for in that specific place. He is most commonly known as Gandalf the Grey due to his grey beard and cloak. Gandalf is one of the wisest of the wizards and he is said to have inner greatness. He cares for all the folks of the Middle-earth unlike the head of the Order, Saruman. Wizards are commanded to aid Men, Elves and Dwarves in their endeavors to bring peace to the Middle-earth and they are not allowed to use force on anyone to dominate them. Gandalf remains true to what he is commanded with.
Gandalf is also very humorous. He uses humor at a number of events and his humor brings him even closer to the folks like hobbits which are usually ignored by the folks like Men and Elves. Gandalf is very friendly with Bilbo Baggins, one of the hobbits. Hobbits usually avoid having adventures and they do not go out of their bounds but Gandalf tricks Bilbo into having an adventure into his own. Gandalf tricks Bilbo into having a party for the dwarf Thorin and twelve others of his folk. The dwarves tell Bilbo about the Lonely Mountain and the enormous treasure in the Lonely Mountain from the dragon Smaug. When the dwarves tell the whole story to Bilbo, Gandalf takes advantage of Bilbo`s excitement and unveils a map that shows a secret passage into the mountain. Gandalf then proposes that Bilbo should join the company for the expedition into the Lonely Mountain for the treasure and Bilbo agrees to join them. Thus Gandalf succeeds in tricking Bilbo into getting out of the Shire, the place where the hobbits live, and having a dangerous adventure.
