Chronicle of a Death Foretold is a non-linear story told by an unknown narrator. It describes the occurrences surrounding the murder of a young man by the name Santiago Nasar who came from an affluent family and had been accused of deflowering Angela Vicario. Angela Vicario was a young bride who had been married by Bayardo San Roman. After their wedding day, Bayardo took his wife back to her parent’s home because he discovered that she was not a virgin. Chastity among girls was highly valued in that society. Consequently, when the mother Angela’s mother realized that her daughter was not a virgin, she was outraged and incredible ashamed. In the Chronicle of a Death Foretold book, there are various instances of how financial stability and financial instability shaped various characters in the book.
For instance, Santiago came from an affluent family, and he had actually inherited the ranch of his late dad. Consequently, he acts recklessly just like how many kids from wealthy families would behave. We are told that he recklessly kills animals, attends numerous parties, and he is incredibly arrogant (Knopf). Moreover, he treats people with contempt as he feels that he is untouchable because of his financial wealth. For instance, we see that he molests Divina Flor every time he would find her alone in the house. He liked the girl but money had unfortunately corrupted him, and for that reason, he never felt the need of treating anyone nicely even those he loved.
