Moving has always been difficult for me. I am always forced to adapt to new ways of life and to learn new lifestyles which often take time. As a child, I always saw how interdependent my family was and I grew up believing that people need to stick together and feed off from each other’s energy. However, being in the US has thrown me into a cultural confusion because of the differences in values and assumptions that I get to encounter on a daily basis. By focusing on the aspects of individualism, informality, and time, this article seeks to expound on some of the values and assumptions I have encountered during my stay in the US.
From a young age, children in the US are taught to be independent and to live off their hard work and sweat. This, apparently, as most parents will say, helps them become more mature and independent. Children are taught to be independent from a young age and this fosters the culture and spirit of individualism.
