Vitckhek points out that the environmental degradation in the Indonesian island of Sumatra has been worsened by human activities and profiteering businesses that have ignored repercussions of deforestation and pollution. In particular, he highlights that illegal logging and the profitable commercial activities that have led to forest clearing, and combined with high population the people living in cramped places dump waste into the ocean. The writer identifies the root cause of the problem being foreign investment deregulation and population growth, which increased pressure on the land. The commercial entities have stripped the land bare looking for timber and farming lands, but may ignore that the activities were unsustainable now that lands cannot support sustainable agriculture. The loggers profit massively while the local and national government have ignored the plight of the people living in Sumatra who are unable to eke out a living where agriculture is now unsuitable and the waters are highly polluted. Even as there has been a gradual sea rise, the local populations do not understand that deforestation has increased the risk of climate change. The environmental crisis affecting Indonesia is an unmitigated disaster, and with nobody willing to take responsibility the declining forest cover will have long-term negative repercussions.
