The texts chosen for this assignment are “Estimation of Passengers Left Behind by Trains in High-Frequency Transit Service Operating Near Capacity” by Eli Miller, Gabriel Sanchez-Martinez and Neema Nassir and “Analyzing Destination Choice Preferences in Bicycle Sharing Systems: An Investigation of Chicago’s Divvy System”, an article by a PhD engineering student McGill University, called Ahmadreza Faghih-Imani. These two texts are written to expand on the knowledge of transportation.
Summary
Miller et al. of “Estimation of Passengers Left Behind by Trains in High-Frequency Transit Service Operating Near Capacity” state that measuring and having clear records of rail system crowding is important since crowding data has close relations and further implications for safety, operations control, measurement of the performance of the transport system, service planning and customer information as well as their ultimate satisfaction (497). Therefore, this article is a proposition of a bi-level regression model that the transit system can use in measuring and creating a close estimation of the number of passengers left behind waiting on a platform by high-frequency trains operating at capacity. This model collects the information about left passengers through its inputs by deriving information from data of automatic fare collection and vehicle location. Once the data has been tabulated, a calculation is done to determine the number of capacities that are not occupied then relating the information to the number of passengers left behind (Miller et al. 500).
In “Analyzing Destination Choice Preferences in Bicycle Sharing Systems: An Investigation of Chicago’s Divvy System”, Faghih-Imani states that there has been a significant increase in the number of persons using the bicycle sharing system as a reliable, viable and sustainable mode of transportation for short trips in the recent years (54). Therefore, with the growing preference of the use of bicycle sharing system, this article aims at sufficiently carrying out a quantitative research using the random utility maximization approach to the contributing factors of the love for bicycles and the process that an individual goes through before identifying their final destination using bicycle sharing system. The author proposes the application of a model that allows operators of bicycle sharing system to adequately and perfectly plan their services by examining the impacts that one could have in relation to travel distance, land use and how one evaluates their destination preference with their access to public transportation infrastructure (Faghih-Imani 56). Moreover, the developed version of the proposed model would represent the function of distance with utility profiles that would visually represent the decision making process in ones’ mind in when selecting bicycles as their mode of transportation.

To begin with, the authors of “Estimation of Passengers Left Behind by Trains in High-Frequency Transit Service Operating Near Capacity” have carefully used the art of rhetorical ploys when introducing their proposal in the first section of the article. The specific rhetorical ploy used in this segment is appeal to novelty used to catch the attention of the reader’s mind by first identifying the problem experienced by public transit agencies then introducing their innovation of a configuration that would solve the problem through computing of crowding levels using the suggestive automated vehicle location and automated fare collection data (Lunsford et al. 108). Secondly, this text attempts to persuade its readers by starting with addressing all the potential objections followed by correct solutions to the problems. The first state such objections as the case of Transport of London between 2014 and 2016 when it reported a temporary closure of the rail stations preventing 1,078 passengers from accessing the waiting platform area due to overcrowding (Miller et al. 226).
