The world of comics is one that has continued to enjoy exponential growth in recent years particularly due to the popularization of comic books, superheroes, and superhero movies. While this has served up society with an endless stream of entertainment across different media, it has done little to address the manner in which female superheroes are portrayed and what this means for women as well as for comics. The overt sexual objectification of female superheroes continues to represent the unequal and unfair representation of gender in comics, which essentially does little to convert more women into avid comic book readers. This is an issue that must be addressed.

In this article, the author chooses to address the issue of comic book readership among women in the modern society. While the assumption, however false, has always been that women do not enjoy or read comic books, it is quite clear that the exact opposite is true. Women have not only been keen readers of comics in the past, but are now increasing the attention that they pay to comic books, their characters, and their worlds (Berlatsky). Reliable data clearly demonstrates that women have always been interested in superhero stories, and they are now more interested than ever, taking into account the recent explosion of comics and superhero stories in modern culture.
