Cinderella and Gender-based Societal Constructs between Time and Space
Understanding the themes relative to various art pieces is essential for any reader. It allows him to understand better and appreciate how various pieces are related to one another and even the external circumstances that lead to such circumstances. In line with this, this article would like to focus on the themes between the original Cinderella by Rhodopis, A Modern Cinderella by Louisa May Alcott, and The Tale of Ye Xian by Duan Chengshi. Notably, the author would like to discuss the variations and similarities between these versions relative to their environmental and contextual elements. The author believes that understanding the various themes across different timelines and contexts is essential for a greater appreciation of both the texts and the culture surrounding them.
Similarities and Differences
One of the most apparent and essential themes across these various literary pieces is that of "gracefulness" as a necessary result of gender-based societal constructs. In the modern rendition of Cinderella, we know that the main protagonist (Cinderella) was mistreated by her stepmother and stepsisters after her father died. She was made an outcast and even a housemaid in her own house, despite her own birthright. Nonetheless, the modern version of the story, as written by Alcott, still showed a graceful and kind princess who did not even plan on exacting revenge. In the end, Cinderella was then rewarded with her finding her true love and living her dream, which was encapsulated by the phrase "happy ever after."
