Zélie needs to bring back magic to Orïsha to save the people and save them from a ruthless king who killed her mother. The kosidán and maji are in conflict with each other in the story, with the kosidán having enslaved some maji members. Zélie is a maji like her late mother, but her father is a kosidán. Thus, Zélie decides to challenge the king and change the system that keeps the people down. As such, she goes on a journey searching for the magic that will bring the two people together. In the story, Zélie focuses on liberating the maji class with the people working together with the kosidán in a society where there is equality.
