1 What qualities most valued by the Romans are displayed in Dido and Camilla? Are there qualities in them that are "un-Roman"?
Ancient Romans are people who have a defined culture, structure, and principles to which they ascribe to. On the one hand, their citizens believe that everyone, male, female, or children, should have certain qualities such as patriotism, courage, and the ability to help one another. These qualities are some of the values that Dido and Camilla have, which is the reason why some people revere them. For example, Dido is considered, not only as the queen, but also the founder of Carthage. This kind of leadership is a huge deal especially considering that women are viewed as docile back then.
On the other hand, the romans also believe in the division between the roles of the male and the female. Particularly, they believe that men should fight, think, and govern, while women should only tend to the household and ensure the continuity of society. Going back to the story of Dido and Camilla, both the characters courage and leadership despite being a female is what is considered as “un-Roman” as depicted by the way other characters criticize them.
