Narrative and film editing are distinct forms of art in themselves. They basically encompass all the aspects that combine to make movies what they are. There are various things and activities done behind the scenes, while it also calls for a good understanding of the finer details of the film. Walter Murch provides a very detailed almost practical approach to the whole thing, in his collection, In the Blink of An Eye. This collection is simply a volume of transcribed lectures by Murch, elucidating all the aspects of film editing, both in the traditional and modern aspects.
Even in the current digital age, his beliefs and teachings on film editing are still quite applicable, only that the old mechanical editing have been replaced by digital editing. The fundamental aspects that built the film industry are still much the same...
