What pull factors are likely to help the city of Sault Ste. Marie attract people from other parts of Ontario and Canada to help boost its population base in the next 10 years?
The city of Sault Ste. Marie is located in Algoma District of Ontario, Canada. It is the third largest city in Northern Ontario. As of the census carried out in 2011, the city had a population of 79,800 (Citi-Data). Generally, pull factors attract people from other places into another location. The purpose of this paper is to identify and discuss the pull factors that are likely to help the city of Sault Ste. Marie attract people from other parts of Ontario and Canada at large to help boost its population base in the next 10 years.
The pull factors that are likely to help the city include the following: Higher wages – Economics typically provide the biggest pull factors for potential migrants (Parkins 12). People who move to the city of Sault Ste. Marie from other parts of Ontario and Canada at large, will find the same work they were doing to be rewarded with higher wages. Moreover, they will also find a greater safety net of welfare benefit in case they are not able to find work in this city. Aware of this situation, people from other parts of Ontario and Canada at large will be drawn to the city of Sault Ste. Marie where they can maximize benefits, in turn boosting the city’s population base. The wages in this city are much higher than in other parts of Ontario and Canada at large (Economic Development Corporation). The second pull factor is Labor demand/job opportunities – Currently, the city of Sault Ste. Marie creates thousands of jobs that the current domestic workers or labor force cannot completely fill. This is likely to attract people from other parts of Ontario and Canada at large to fill up these job positions, and as they migrate to the city for jobs, they help to boost its population base.
The other pull factor is environment – The city of Sault Ste. Marie has attractive environment including sea sides, Sault Ste. Marie Canal, St Mary’s River, and Saint Mary’s Rapids, which all attract people from other parts of Ontario and Canada to this city. Other attractive environmental aspects include Sault lock which connects the lower Great Lakes with Lake Superior, Lake Superior Provincial Park, Pancake Bay Provincial Park and Batchawana Bay Provincial Park. Moreover, the city has exclusive and great snowboard and ski destinations that attract people from other parts of Ontario and Canada (Sault Ste Marie). The high rocky ridges that overlook the scenic waters in the city make hiking around Sault Ste. Marie in Ontario a dream for many who move here from other areas of Ontario and Canada. The city is an outdoor haven where fishing, boating, hiking, skiing, wildlife viewing and gaming at...
