ENGL 1012
Position Paper #1

Write a 4 - 6 page paper that supports your position on a focused aspect of this semester’s course theme (how the foods we eat are killing our planet). The idea you choose to explore should be based in Dr. Richard Oppenlander’s book Comfortably Unaware.

Once you decide on a topic, research the topic thoroughly (primarily using the academic databases), decide what your position is, and write a paper that supports your position.
Your Thesis Statement (statement of position) is very important in an argument research paper. The thesis will be a Claim of Fact, a Claim of Policy, or a Claim of Value. (See explanation of these types of claims in the Week 2 PowerPoint called “The Nature of Argument.) Your thesis statement must be underlined in your paper.

Remember: this is not just research; it is research that you use to support your position (your scholarly opinion) on an important matter concerning the detrimental impact of the meat/ fish industries on our planet.

Requirements:
*4 full pages
*Use of at least 4 credible sources as support
*At least 2 of your sources must be materials from the Academic Databases.
*You may use Oppenlander’s book as one of your sources but you are not required to.

HOW THE FOOD WE EAT ARE KILLING OUR PLANETS
The climate is changing over the years has a result of modification of the atmosphere. The adjustment of the atmosphere is a result of various issues, which may be biological, geographical, or chemical. Mostly it is organic, and we as humans are the once causing this by the activities we are engaged in. I support Ellen’s statement that the food we eat is affecting our environment. We need to taking charge and changing our ways or in a few years; we will ultimately damage our home.
The 21st century has had significant innovations and discoveries, thus making a substantial change in daily life. However, the changes have tagged along with tremendous impacts on planet earth, the major one being climate change. All over the world, climate change has become a prevalent topic in scientific discussions, since solutions to this issue are vital for the future. The greatest climatic threat of the 21st century is global warming. Though climate change is seemingly a complex global issue, the reports by NASA show that the average Earth temperature had increased by approximately one degree Fahrenheit by the 20th century. The paper seeks to analyze some climate change solutions that can help protect the environment, making the world a conducive place. Among the changes discussed in the article are the adoption of wind power, bioremediation, and green buildings.
The primary cause of climate change is the emission of greenhouse gases. Therefore, to combat climate change, it is essential to reduce carbon emissions. With industrial growth, the emission of carbon gases has increased. To combat this, the adoption of wind power is crucial. The EPA has mentioned wind power as a fast-growing energy resource since its discovery in 1990. Wind turbines use wind for electricity generation, and since it is a renewable source of energy, it has no significant environmental impacts (EPA). Besides, wind turbines need no water to operate; therefore, the emission of carbon gas is very minimal.
We have cut down many trees over the years leading to the decrease in the absorption of carbon dioxide and the production of oxygen, which is quickly becoming a significant issue because our number as humans is increasing every day. Soon the earth will be unable to support us because we keep cutting down what produces the air we breathe. Deforestation also leads to the loss of animal species, which will eventually lead to a change in ecosystems. From the research, most of the earth e animals and plants live in the forests, and they are struggling to survive the deforestation that destroys the place they call home. Another significant effect of cutting down trees leads to the loss of many plant species, which may help cure diseases. From the book of Leslie’s Taylor (p. 25), “The Healing Power of Rainforest Herbs, 70 percent of the medications that fight cancer originates in the rainforest.” it means that by cutting down trees we are not only killing animals and plants species we are also destroying our source of medicines.
Fishing, especially deep fishing, is a significant problem for the environment. The sea is home to a lot of many species. Many modern companies are choosing modern fishing methods like the heavy ‘bottom trawling.' This method requires you to drag the net at the bottom of the sea beds that may take centuries to repair. The United Nations states that 70 percent of t...
