Jail Verses Prison
A jail is a correctional institution used in detaining offenders considered in lawful government custody. The offenders identifies with the convicted persons already serving a sentence for short term or persons who are awaiting trial. A prison is a correctional institution used by the government in detaining persons lawfully under the custody. The offenders identifies with the convicted persons for long term or the accused persons awaiting trial. The persons are confined for punishment while in trial (Carlson and Garrett 106).
Jails holds offenders’ already awaiting trial, it is worth noting that in jails, people found guilty of the offences are subjected to short duration in jails, at most times less than two years. This clearly indicates that the flow of people convicted in the jails is high compared to people convicted in the prisons. This is different in the prisons where people convicted of the relevant crimes are sentenced for a period of more than two years and long term in nature (Carlson and Garrett 108).
Jails considering the Jurisdiction are run by the county sheriff’s departments while prisons are run by the Prisons and Corrections office in states assigned; Prisons are under the federal prisons jurisdiction. This is essential considering the corrections of the offenders. Family members and visitors are restricted and have to obtain permissions to see the jail inmates and the prisons inmates. Visitors and members of the family are required to book and organize before the actual visit (Carlson and Garrett 132).
In jails and prisons, people are physically confined and restricted from the outside world. Persons are deprived personal freedoms and offered corrective chances in the character building systems.
