The day-to-day roles of a correctional officer mainly revolve around supervising and managing inmates. Correctional officers ensure law and order in the correctional facility and keep inmates safe from harm. As a correctional officer, you must put up with a lot of things, such as stopping altercations between prisoners, inspecting the cells, reviewing their mail, and protecting fellow workers from malicious assaults by prisoners. Because the United States has one of the highest jail populations in the world, careers for prison officials are in high demand. On a typical day, correctional officers put their lives in the line of duty. Often cases of assaults, disturbances, fights, and escape attempts occur and are required to take charge. The daily encounters at a correctional facility are mentally draining and likely affect you beyond the workplace.
As a correctional officer, you are required to be in charge of persons that have been arrested or given a jail sentence. Working hours are arranged in eight-hour shifts that include holidays and weekends. Correctional officers’ responsibilities vary based on the court. Typical roles include supervising prisoner interaction, conducting frequent inspections, serving meals, and documenting convicts’ behavior.
Being a correctional officer, you should always be alert. Penitentiary officers frequently witness convicts fatally attack one another, fight in gangs, or set fire to their cells. Some inmates will harm themselves or commit suicide. Tuberculosis, HIV/Aids, and other communicable diseases are common in prison facilities, and staying in the facility exposes you to these diseases.
