The Triangle Shirtwaist Company Fire was one of the single deadliest factory disasters in New York City's history. On March 25, 1911, a fire broke out on the 8th floor and quickly spread to other Triangle Shirtwaist Company floors, a garment factory owned by Max Blanck and Isaac Harris. The fire started at around 4:30 pm in one of the scrap bins containing shirtwaist cuttings, just as the employees were preparing to go home. Although the floor had several exits, most of these, including emergency exits, were locked to prevent workers from taking overlong breaks, keep out union organizers, and prevent factory theft.
