The Medici family remained in power in Florence city throughout the period of Renaissance. In this way, the family had a major influence on the development of the Renaissance because of their support of arts and the philosophy of humanism. The family supported many artists at the time by paying them commissions for any major pieces or works that they completed. This means that many artists had the feeling of peace because they could focus on their work knowing they would get compensation. One major contributor to Renaissance art is Cosimo de Medici who came to power in 1429 (Barton). Cosimo supported the continuing of arts by contracting the construction of great cathedrals and also supporting major artists at that time to decorate these cathedrals.
