The Oregon Trail Journey
Oregon Trail route was used by many people who were migrating to the Western part of the United States of America between the years 1841-1869. There are also different people who travelled on this trial and they tried as much as they would to keep and share an account of their journey to help other people who might travel on the route. Letter by One of the Immigrants of 1843 and William Porter’s Letter Home are some of the primary sources that give an account of the Oregon Trail. Letter By One of the Immigrants of 1843 was written by Jesse Looney to his brother-in-law Major James C. Bond on October 27th 1843. The letter was sent by Lt. Fremont and it took almost one year before it finally reached his brother –in-law. Looney informs his brother-in-law about the long journey and some of the challenges they have gone through. William Porter's Letter Home was also written by William Porter on 24th June 1848. Through the letter, Porter informs his family members about his experiences of crossing the North Fork of Platte. He narrates some of the challenges they have gone through and offers tips on how they can prepare for the journey. Even though the letters were written at different times, one can easily identify that Oregon Trail journey was indeed a journey full of obstacles but unity and adequate preparation helped them to counter these obstacles.
