Role of African-Americans soldiers during the American Civil War.
During the American Civil War, African-American soldiers were engaged in a sate of dilemma on whether or not to support their country during the American Civil War. The main reason behind this situation was that the United States of America was against offering the African-American the freedom to engage in fighting such a war. However, a campaign known as double victory aided in saving the situation where the African-American soldiers were encouraged to participate in this war at the dispose of such claims that it was only the white/native soldiers that were required to participate in the civil war. According to Foner who quoted a previous speech by Frederick Douglass while addressing an audience, who agued that "Once let the black man get upon his person the brass letters U.S.; let him get an eagle on his button, and a musket on his shoulder, and bullets in his pocket, and there is no power on earth or under the earth which can deny that he has earned the right of citizenship in the United States" (536), it is worthy to therefore have a concise research on the role of African-Americans soldiers during the American Civil War.
The significant and most important role played by the African-American army truck drivers was life-risking activities whereby they purposively delivered food, fuel and ammunition to the white soldiers during the Civil War (Bergeron, 2002). This really showed how the African-American soldiers contributed to the civil war not on the basis of intension to only fight, but also to prove they had the democratic and civil right to fight, that they had to exercise regardless of all resistance faced. The African-American women too played a unique role during the war whereby they fully engaged in civilian defense, taking care of the wounded and also participation in war bonds sales. African-American leaders such as Frederick Douglass played unique roles in efforts all aimed at recruiting the black community in the military.
