John Brown was an abolitionist whose avid hatred of slavery led him to get hold of the United States arsenal at Harpers Ferry in October 1859. Many believe that his intention was to arm slaves for a rebellion, although he denied that. He was hanged for treason against the Commonwealth of Virginia and became a martyr particularly among those who sought to end slavery in the United States (Stauffer & Todd 24). With response to Brown’s raid and trial, Southerners and Northerners displayed ascetically opposite reactions.
On the night of October 16, 1859, John Brown led 21 followers on a raid intended to seize the United States arsenal at Harpers Ferry in today’s West Virginia. He had convinced several Northern abolitionists to offer him financial support for his actions. During the raid, ten of Brown’s raiders were killed while seven others including Brown were captured (Hamner).
