What brought Mumler to trial? What was he charged with?
Mumler was brought to trial because he was accused of spiritual crimes. One of the testifiers, Hickey, argued that he had seen a photograph taken by Mumler, a living person but with a shadowy outline of a person in the background believed to be a spirit. In the trial, Mumler was charged with larceny, fraud, and misdemeanor (Maseau 242). In other words, he used the idea of photographing spirits to appeal to consumers of his photography.
