If I were a worker in the 19th Century, I would want to join the American Federation of Labor (AFL) because its goals were better than those of the Knights of labor (KoL). The AFL covered similar goals to the KoL but with additional goals that made it a better organization to represent a 19th-century worker. The goals the two organizations shared were ending child labor which was rampant during the time, having shorter working hours (8 hours) and improving working conditions (Rise of Labor Unions-Knights of Labor (KOL) and the American Federation of Labor (AFL), pg. 2). Other goals for the two organizations were improving wages, equal pay for men and women, and improving working conditions (Chapter 2, pg. 77).
