Youth’s Responsibility of Teaching Social Media
It is no doubt that social media has been prevalent in almost any aspect of our lives these days. Most people, regardless of age, gender, and background has continuously used this technology to communicate, collaborate, and share ideas with almost anyone all over the world. Most of the social media platforms these days enables everyone with a decent internet connection and a device (to which they could be accessed) to do almost anything with a flick of a finger. In line with this, this study would discuss why the young can teach social media to the elderly. Specifically, this article would also discuss how the youth can teach social media to those who are older than them. This includes how they should do it and the aspects of social media that they should be teaching. While there are plenty of arguments about why the young should and should not be teaching social media, it is also evident that they still has a huge role in the perpetration of social media both as users and educator. Nevertheless, some counterarguments about the same idea would also be discussed in the succeeding chapters of this article. All in all, the author of this paper believes that because of their inclination towards social media platforms, the youth must teach the elderly how to use it in such a way that would benefit their well-being.
Why the Youth Cannot Teach Social Media Elderly
There have been many studies stating that the use of social media has been the least favorite among the elderly. As of 2017, estimates show that the number of Americans aged 65 and above, who have been using social media has increased to about 34% as compared to previous results of 27% back in 2013 (Cohen 2). This merely suggests how prevalent the influence of this technology to everyone regardless of age. For the most part, studies have proven that the elderly use social media in a variety of ways including keeping in touch, starting a new business, learning, and even meeting others (Ng 5). From this, it could be seen that the usage and knowledge of social media from the elderly is already high. Thus, there is no need for the youth to be teaching social media to the elderly.
Another reason why the youth cannot teach social media to the elderly is that the youth are too fixated (or preoccupied) on the use of the platform itself, that teaching would consume their extra time that could have been used for other things. Based on the study done by Cornejo, Tentori, and Favela (p. 3), it was pointed out that despite the importance of SNSs towards the addition of extra channels for communication with each other, it could also decrease the amount of interaction between family members (including the elderly and the young ones). Consequently, this decrease in interaction would make the youth a poor choice for this platform’s educators. Thus, instead of teaching social media to the elderly, the youth could then engage in other skills that would increase physical, social interaction between them and their elderly loved ones. Aside from this, a research done by the University of Missouri (p. 2), have found out that social media should be the activity, which young people should devote to at the very least. This is because of all the negative effects that it could bring to an individual’s health. In light of this, it could be seen that the youth could engage in other activities that are healthy, active, and fun. Activities which they could, in turn, teach their elderlies (Bitner 8). Thus, instead of teaching social media to the elderly, the youth can teach them skills without resorting to the use of platforms, that could instead lead to episodes of depression and other harmful effects to their well-being.
Lastly, the youth cannot teach social media to the elderly because its usage is proven to undermine the health goals of individuals, especially the elderly. As stated earlier, the youth can engage in a variety of things instead of just spending the whole day browsing the internet or teaching the elderly about how to. Notably, Rook (p. 4) stated that some of the possible consequences of social media could then be the reason that undermines the health routine of the elderly. Consequently, the youth could instead engage their elderly relatives and reach out to them and help them to “re-engage” once again. Aside from this, the youth could teach them personally about how to manage their physical fitness rather than resorting to any routines that posts in social media would suggest.
