Behaviour Change Assignment (20%)
My life without sugar
Using the behaviour change steps listed below; list the steps taken to make one behaviour change in your life.
1. Contemplation –individuals in this stage are aware they have a behavioural problem and are considering changing it within the next six months
2. Preparation – people in this stage intend to change problem behaviour within the next month. Some focus on a master plan.
3. Action – people at this stage are modifying their behaviour according to their plan.
4. Maintenance – in this stage, individuals have continued to work at changing their behaviour. The change may take up to six month to a lifetime.
5. Termination – while it may take two to five years, a behaviour becomes so deeply ingrained that a person can`t imagine abandoning it.
Before you start your plan of action, you must:
List your goal (s)
- Draw up a contract with yourself (see attached contract), stating what you will achieve over the next two months, also state how you will reward yourself.
- Use the strategies for prevention and change listed below, to assist you with your plans
1. setting realistic goals using SMART model- specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, trackable.
2. determine your goal and define it in words and on paper
3. identify your resources –do you have skills, knowledge, time,finances-whatever it takes
4. choose a plan, think it step by step
5. systematically analyze barriers-list solutions for any obstacles you foresee
6. ask yourself what worked and what didn`t
7. how to make change: get support from friends. Focus on immediate rewards, reward regularly. Small, regular rewards are more effective in keeping up motivation.
8. expect and accept some relapses. During this critical time, get as much support as you can. In addition, work hard on self-motivation, reminding yourself daily of what you have to gain by sticking with your new health habit.
Start working on your plan:
- For the action stage, maintain a journal, list what you are doing on a weekly basis. In summary discuss how you will maintain the goal (s) set out in your plan
- REMEMBER THIS IS YOUR PLAN, IT WILL LOOK LIKE NO OTHER PLAN, BE CREATIVE, HAVE FUN!!
MARKS WILL BE ACHIEVED IF YOU INCLUDE:

My Life Without Sugar
Human`s preference for sweet food is hardwired. The American Heart Associated has already issued a statement urging all citizens to cut back on sugar, particularly softdrinks and candy. According to the directive, women should not get more than 6 teaspoons per day while men have a recommended limit of 9 teaspoons. These guidelines apply only to food added with processed sweeteners and syrups.
Through my research, I have discovered that harmful sugar typically comes from refined carbohydrates such as those found in some types of breads, cereals and pasta. I have also found that frequent consumption of sugar and refined carbohydrates can cause impaired blood sugar regulation (which can then lead to diabetes if untreated), obesity, sugar addiction, poor digestion, suppressed immunity, heart disease, tissue damage, among many others ADDIN Mendeley Citation{3b028075-d1c9-429a-af42-86c3615de4ce} CSL_CITATION { "citationItems" : [ { "id" : "ITEM-1", "itemData" : { "URL" : "http://naturalbias.com/how-sugar-can-ruin-your-life/", "accessed" : { "date-parts" : [ [ "2011", "11", "4" ] ] }, "author" : [ { "family" : "Miller", "given" : "Vin" } ], "container-title" : "Natural Bias", "id" : "ITEM-1", "issued" : { "date-parts" : [ [ "2009" ] ] }, "title" : "How Sugar Can Ruin Your Life", "type" : "webpage" }, "uris" : [ "/documents/?uuid=3b028075-d1c9-429a-af42-86c3615de4ce" ] } ], "mendeley" : { "previouslyFormattedCitation" : "(Miller)" }, "properties" : { "noteIndex" : 0 }, "schema" : "https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json" } (Miller).
It is important for me to mention my findings because these serve as bases for my plan. Like most students, I love drinking soda and eating candies because they are not only readily available, but also because they satisfy my taste buds. When I get hungry inside the classroom, I eat candy to ease the hunger pangs. To end my meals, I typically eat a slice of cake, or sometimes, ice cream. At times, I feel that my body is toxic, and I decide to diet for a while, only to go back to my old ways. I say this as a prelude to my plan because this is essential. I have realized that in order for me to break my addiction to sugar, then I need to work on my will. I have discovered that the success of this plan will have everything to do with my belief system.
This is the first step of my plan. I have to reorient my beliefs about sugar, that way, all the other stuff I plan to do will create a long term change in my life. Now that I discovered the negative effects of manufactured sugar, I plan to discover more.
For the first two weeks of this plan, I will continue to search for the different kinds of sugars that I should be wary of. I will also learn how to read the labels of products I buy at the supermarket and be on the lookout for potentially harmful sugars such as dextrose, fructose, dextrin, xylitol, maple syrup, etc. Moreover, I will want to know what products I should avoid.
