The intersection of BIM and sustainable design
Through information technology innovations, participants in the construction industry have employed the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM). BIM is relevant for civil engineers as it helps during documentation, designing, and construction management. Initially, BIM was seen as a cost cutting tool through presenting better construction designs later maintained at a lower. By contrast, focus on Sustainable Design emanates from the need to conserve the natural environment in a sustainable manner. The increasing number of building projects is a course for concern on whether it will be sustainable, in terms of energy needs and the accessibility of construction materials. Thus, there is a need to look into the intersection of BIM and sustainable design.
BIM is a new building model with a better capacity to analyze and evaluate the performance of constructions. BIM is equally relevant in application to Sustainable Design as the latter requires constant analysis and reevaluation in the construction process. Older techniques, models and drawings are tedious. Additionally, the graphic presentation of drawings in conventional CAD is a lengthy process requiring interpretation and analysis which renders the whole process too costly. With the use of BIM all information pertaining to the building is captured and graphically represents the design and information relevant for Sustainable Design.
