Paper 2 Directions and Topics
Length: 1200-1500 words. You may use the Word Count feature in Word to determine the length of your paper. Papers less than 1200 words do not meet the Language/Design requirement under Competency on the Brenau Writing Rubric and, therefore, will not pass. A Works Cited page does not count towards the length requirement.
Formatting: Double-space your entire paper. Do not skip extra spaces. Use Times New Roman 12 pt font. Use 1” margins, and be careful: some programs, especially older versions of Word, have default margins of 1.25. Be sure to change your margins to 1”. If you do not know how to do this, contact me and I will help you.
Citation Style: Use MLA style for this paper (and all papers in this class). Your paper should include a title. Cite all quotations or paraphrases of source material using MLA style in-text citations, and, if a direct quotation, quotation marks. Format your paper according to MLA style.
Research Requirement: This paper is a research-enriched essay. That means that you are required to use a peer-reviewed secondary source in this paper. Your secondary source should be a journal article located through the LibGuides/Galileo databases; other internet sources do not count for this requirement. You should use this source to support a claim that you’re making in the paper. Thus, your Works Cited page should include at least two sources: the peer-reviewed journal article you have located and the essay from our textbook. Your paper may include additional journal articles as sources beyond this requirement if you wish.
Plagiarism Reminder: You may not use outside sources for this paper beyond those described in the Research Requirement section (avoid websites) unless you get prior approval from me. You may not plagiarize – which means consulting internet sources, written sources, or any other kind of source and appropriating its ideas or words without proper acknowledgement. Papers which plagiarize (intentionally or unintentionally) will receive a 0 in accordance with Brenau policy. Again, this paper must represent your own, original work.
Directions: Write a well-developed, thoughtful paper in response to one of the topics below. Pay particular attention to content and organization, including your introduction, thesis statement, body paragraphs, and conclusion. In order to achieve higher grades, display critical thinking in your argument and use of evidence as well as sophisticated use of language. Please refer to the Brenau Writing Rubric for more information on grading.

1.Write an essay analyzing the ways digital technologies have influenced your own intellectual development, drawing from Thompson's essay "Smarter Than You Think: How Technology Is Changing Our Minds for the Better" and other readings from our textbook's chapter "Are We in A Race Against the Machine?" Include an additional secondary source to support or illustrate your claims from the library databases.
2. The chapter "Are We in A Race Against the Machine?" analyzes the ways in which technology negatively or positively impacts our development. Choose one kind of technology present in the world today and make your own argument: does it positively or negatively contribute to the world today? Note that all body paragraphs must utilize quotations and you should plan to draw extensively on one of the essays in this chapter plus one additional secondary source to support or illustrate your claims from the library databases.

Impact of Smart Devices on Intellectual Development
Billions of devices are now connected to the internet and are gathering, analyzing, sharing and transmitting data in real-time. Digital technology has greatly advanced and impacted consumers’ lives as well as change how businesses now market their products and services indubitably. Digital devices such as smartphones are currently equipped with many features, which include, sound recording function, video recording function, camera, and music playback. Today, we have smartphones that send text messages and make calls based on vocal commands. The main question is whether technology is benefitting or destroying society. According to Clive Thompson’s essay “Smarter than You Think: How Technology is Changing Our Minds for the Better”, it is not about the pioneers but it is about us, who use the technology every day of our lives. While there have been positive impacts of smart devices and related technologies in our lives, depending on such technologies would result in deleterious effects in society.
The benefits of modern digital technology are undeniable based on the efficiency and the ease of accessing information, which has all shaped our lives both for better and for worse. This has, therefore, made life easier in terms of banking, ordering food from home, or even turning off the lights in your house, all from the comfort of your palm in seconds. Generation from the past centuries responds differently to today's technology compared to the millennials, who are believed to be having more computing power than the scientists in the 1960’s at the tips of their fingers. Today, it is observed that people from the previous generation logs less time on their screens than teens. Therefore, today technology is considered a double-edged sword. It can only allow us to accomplish things that were only seen as dreams ten years ago. However, it has devolved people's social skills and encouraging laziness. Technology in simple terms is an aid, which if done in excess becomes a hindrance.
Firstly, in the excerpt from “Smarter than You Think”, the author asserts that "the internet has produced a foaming Niagra of writing (Thompson 204”. Supporting his idea, he simply argues that the internet which is the technology has encouraged people to write and express their opinions/ emotions in the form of written texts than ever before. In the previous generation of analog technology people seldom wrote a single word letter while today according to Thompson 36 million books are published every day by people expressing themselves online. And by that said, writing has naturally become a tool of self-expression and an enormous way of communication in today’s world.
Secondly, it calls into question what the true debate about technology is. Today, video games are kids’ new way of spending their free time at home unlike in the past when kids played outdoor games. Thompson takes a different approach in his piece in the chapter "The Digital School", which is a treasure trove unto itself. In this chapter, we can understand the impact of these technology-based games on our kids today. Video games, Thompson says, can serve as a leeway of revealing the potential of students by hooking students to read more excitedly and deeply anything ranging from economics to history (Thompson 204).
