Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery (1948) is one of America’s greatest literatures. The short story is about a small contemporary American village/town that celebrated an annual ritual “the lottery”. The story revolves around the life of Tessie Hutchinson who happens to be the main character. Each year, the town’s lottery culminates in unwarranted and untold murder of some individual in the village. The storyline in the lottery is landscaped by backward ritual/tradition that was initiated by the ancestors of the village. The event has been passed from generation to generation climaxed by the stoning to death of a member of the village who picks a spotted slip from the black box every year.
