In the 18th century, hundreds of international films were produced outside the United States without Hollywood studios' support. This made foreign films demand little attention in the U.S. until the 19th century, when they became famous. Before then, most foreign language films went unnoticed among American audiences. Major factors that contributed to this problem included the lack of film advertisements, disapproval of film subtitles, and specific expectations of movie lovers that could usually differ (Richeri, 2016). Besides, films outside Hollywood were believed to be low quality and attracted limited movie audiences.
