Whether or not the notification system works as its supporters claim it works is a factual question. “Is it legal to dump this product overseas?” is a legal question. Dumping is an unfair trade practice, where a manufacturer sells their products in overseas markets at a lower price than in the domestic market (Obalade 234). Some companies dump banned products that have not met particular safety standards in their home country (Shaw 32). Most of these products may have dire consequences on humans, animals, and the environment. Most governments have made it clear that it is illegal to sell these products in international markets. However, companies maliciously sell them in developing countries to consumers who are not aware of the hazardous nature of such products. There are several instances where such products have been sold to overseas countries from the United States. For instance, the example of pajamas with a dangerous chemical called Tris, which was regarded as flame-retardant. The sale of this product was banned in the United States by the United States Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) (Shaw 32). A similar scenario involves an export of illegal pesticides from the United States to developing countries. The exporting company assumes that the crops cultivated using these pesticides are consumed in the production country. However, the end products may be shipped to international markets, especially in the United States (Shaw 32). Dumping raises a moral question; if a product has been banned in the United States for safety reasons, should it be allowed to be exported to other countries? From a personal point of view, when a product is declared illegal in the United States, it should not be allowed to be dumped into other countries. Exporting banned products to other countries harms the buyers who are not knowledgeable of the harmful effects. Dumping occurs in an attempt to avoid making losses due to the production costs already incurred by the manufacturer (Shaw 33). In most cases, the manufacturing process consumes huge amount of money in terms of labor, purchasing, and transportation of raw materials and other expenses. However, the manufacturers’ actions are not morally permissible because selling such products to innocent consumer overseas, who lacks the relevant information on the safety of these products is unethical. As the manufacturer of Tris-impregnated pajamas, the ethical decision would be to stop the sale of this product to overseas countries.
