The advancement in technology has influenced greatly the way business organizations carry out their operations. Technology is now a big part of every organization. The workforce of today’s organization is largely comprised of millennials who have significantly embraced technology. The customers use various technological platforms to research and purchase goods and services. One of the technological tools that have had an immense impact on the purchase behavior of customers as well as the operations of business organizations is social media. The millennials are the main users of social media and organizations today use the tool to extend marketing campaigns to them. According to Statista (n.d), $30.99 billion was spent on social media marketing by businesses in 2016 globally. Another important statistic is that 96% of businesses globally are using social media as a marketing tool (Statista, n.d). It is deducible that social media has become an important marketing tool for businesses today. Such huge usage by businesses only means the tool is effective in reaching out to the target market.
According to Saravanakumar & SuganthaLakshmi (2012), social media is used by almost all companies irrespective of their sizes. Big brands, as well as small ones, embrace social media as a way of reaching out to existing and potential customers. Examples of big brands that use social media include Burger King, Dell, and IMB.
