We are all aware of the Liebeck v. McDonald's case. After buying a cup of hot coffee from McDonald’s, the lady spilled it in her lap and had to suffer from third-degree burns. At trial, evidence revealed that a restaurant’s coffee should be in the range of 130 to 150 degrees, but in case of McDonald’s coffee, it was brewed at 190 degrees, which is why Liebeck had to face problems. Before watching the video, I thought that McDonald’s had intentionally provided her with such a hot cup of coffee, but the lady herself acknowledged that the spill was her mistake. A jury then awarded her $2.7 million in punitive damages and $160,000 in compensatory damages.
