However, Silicon Valley is not the only place being prominent for the largest technological innovations (Stiebler 100).
Considering the case of China, they have Zhongguancun, which has also developed itself serving as a cradle for developing many technological innovations and has become the technological hub in China. On the other hand, it is also regarded as China’s Silicon Valley (Li, Wenyu and Jiamin 115).
On the basis of functional, structural and foundational aspect there are many similarities and differences in the two silicon. In this way, the current paper will attempt to provide an in-depth analysis of the comparison between these two technological hubs. The paper will also attempt to provide the similarities between these two along with the relevant examples from their prospects.
Silicon Valley is a globally recognized region that aims to serve itself as a global center for social media, innovation, and high technology. As a matter of fact, Silicon Valley has become the largest high-tech corporations in the world (Wajcman 1280). On the other hand, Zhongguancun is another technology hub that has been located in China.
Zhongguancun is quite popular among China, and in certain scenarios, it is referred to as "China's Silicon Valley."The paper aims to provide an in-depth analysis of the comparison between the two silicon valleys. Separate sections have been dedicated to comparison, commonalities, and the methods in which each of them runs a company. The paper helps the reader to understand the main differences between Silicon Valley and Zhongguancun by all means.
Comparison of American/Chinese Silicon Valley
As based on the geographical location of both Silicon Valley’s there are many distinct features prevailing in them. Silicon Valley in America is considered as the biggest tech-hub center serving for thousands of technology startups and companies including many of the prominent and successful ones such as Facebook, Twitter, Google, eBay etc. Furthermore, China’s Silicon Valley’s idea was also floated after the successful implication of American Silicon Valley, and it was then adapted in China (Dong 12).
Based on the origin of Zhongguancun, as a China’s Silicon Valley, the center has developed to a great extent over a short period of time. In this time, Zhongguancun has not only extended in its technological innovations but also geographically in many of the regions of China (Li, Wenyu and Jiamin 111).
Zhongguancun, has also very prominent tech companies in the list such as Baidu, Alibaba, Didi, Tencent etc. Moreover, apart from the originally founded innovations, many of the globally dispersed tech companies are also having their headquarters in Zhongguancun including Google, Oracle etc. Each year, Zhongguancun tends to formulate new plans that help the companies to meet their objectives and goals more precisely
The region of Silicon Valley has employed more than a million information technology workers as per the recent stats (Guzman, Jorge, and Scott Stern 607). There are thousands of high technology companies having their headquarters in Silicon Valley such as Facebook, HP Inc, Twitter, Netflix, etc. There are many famous companies in Zhongguancun such as Lenovo Group, Founder Group, and Stone Group. There are more than 500,000 technicians employed at Zhongguancun (Cao 1000). Many globally-recognized organizations such as Oracle, AMD, Intel, and Google have built their Chinese research centers and headquarters at Zhongguancun Technology Park.
Commonalities between Silicon Valley in China and in America. Based on the common grounds of two Silicon Valley’s both are based on the dimension of making their country and region technologically developed, successful and strong. Both Silicon Valley (in China and America) are striving to make themselves technologically independent and also their struggle is to be prominent with their technological innovations in the world (Stiebler 100).
Moreover, both in Silicon Valley and Zhongguancun are working on the values of innovation, independence, creativity and risk-taking. Furthermore, both are striving hard to provide their audience with the wide range of choices to make in terms of providing them with the substitutes such as WhatsApp does not operate in the premises of China so it has developed an alternate application called WeChat (Li, Wenyu and Jiamin 105).
Zhongguancun (China's Silicon Valley) pertains to have great importance. Both of them are running successfully with achieving each goal day-by-day. When it comes to the entrepreneurial environment of both Silicon Valleys, there is no doubt that the environment is characterized by risk-taking, collaboration, and innovation. They tend to provide the essential framework for tech startups. As the organizations having a similar market and the targeted audience has been increased in the two Silicon Valleys, it has resulted in allowing customers to prefer variety and choices
Differences in Social Media Platforms. As explained above, China’s Silicon Valley is the precedent of the American Silicon Valley, but despite the short period of time, it has developed a lot. Considering the technological world, there are certain aspects on which the two Valleys can be regarded as in competition (Li, Wenyu and Jiamin 110).
Keeping in the notice the competition there are certain differences based on their technologies, social media platforms and startups. One of the major difference is that WhatsApp does not operate in the premises of China so it has developed an alternate application called WeChat. Similarly, Youtube and Twitter also do not work in China. Hence, to be independent china has developed their own substitute for similar purposes such as they have developed TudouandYouku to replace Youtube. On the other hand, they have SinaWeibo to work on the place of Twitter.
Twitter is undoubtedly one of the most widely used social media platforms that help to make someone's voice reach to the world. However, Zhongguancun has made SinaWeibo which can be considered equivalent of twitter (Cao 988). Considering the case of YouTube, there have been two equivalents for this: Youku and Tudou. It must be considered that the social media platforms of China tend to vary due to the censorship.
YouTube vs. Tudou
YouTube is one of the most prominent streaming as well as a video sharing technology in the world. It has almost more than billion users all over the world. The company provides its supports for multiple users providing them with the facility in multiple languages. However, China has blocked the access of YouTube for its users (Dong 9).
Besides, the above step by the government of China has provided an opportunity to many of the local tech developers to provide the Chinese users with an alternate. Many of the alternates such as Tencent, PPTV, iQiyi etc., has been developed for the purpose (Stiebler 100). However, Tudou, Inc. has developed itself as one of the main competitors of YouTube in China. In this way, both the video sharing and streaming websites are sharing almost the similar model as well as similar challenges regarding the piracy and revenue generations (Poujol 280).
When it comes to the Chinese netizens, Zhongguancun has made them a user who uses online platforms in a different way than Americans use YouTube. YouTube contains short videos mostly, however, Tudou and Youku contain longer videos. On YouTube, anyone can put any type of content which is basically the entire content of what YouTube is filled with. On the other hand, in Youku and Tudou, the content is mainly produced by professionals. The matter of fact is that the sites by Zhongguancun pertain to have resemblance with Hulu.
Twitter vs. SinaWeibo
Like other technological blockades by China government on foreign websites and platform, Twitter is also blocked in China. However, this blockade also provided a way for SinaWeibotoreplace Twitter for Chinese users (Ma, Yusheng and Jonathan 140). SinaWeibo is also a microblogging website, with some similar features to Twitter. Some of its features are considered way better than Twitter that is why it is not only used among Chinese use...
