Once someone is infected with HIV, there is an accompanying progression of HIV infection to full-blown HIV/AIDS. This progression may depend on several factors, including individuals’ immune systems and treatment interventions. When, left, untreated, there are specific phases of infection progression. In the absence of treatment, e.g. antiretroviral therapy, the virus replicates itself, leading to a deleterious impact on the immune system.
Stage one is called an acute primary infection, whereby an infected person feels like someone who got flu-like symptoms. These symptoms include fever, rash, muscle and joint pain, sore throat, headache, gastrointestinal disturbances and swollen glands.
