How the Hydrologic cycle is altered by human activity
Human activities, such as irrigation have a negative impact on the water cycle. With the rise in human population, the demands on the land have also increased. Irrigation removes water from its natural source, and this leads to run-off and leaching, where it is utilized (Egger 9-10). This results in the removal of nutrients as farmers using more fertilizers in keeping their pastures productive as waterways become heavily polluted.
Since groundwater takes numerous years to recharge naturally, humans are currently using freshwater resources far rapidly than they can be replenished. This has negatively affected the water cycle leading to catastrophic events such as droughts occurring in various regions globally (Egger 12). Risks of flooding have been increased at the rate at which water is being shed from the land, and therefore, this has increased the magnitude of peak flows.
