Silence of the Lambs Mise-en-Scene
Chapter One (Mise-en-scene: Within the Image)
Select one of the six images from Silence of the Lambs provided in the Silence of the Lambs images tab in Blackboard and describe its mise-en-scene. Then, using the instructions below, provide an interpretation of how the shot might be interpreted in relation to the story of the film. Look at pages 21-23 of Sikov’s text for examples.
1) Provide a descriptive list of the shot similar to the example provided at the bottom of page 21-top of page 22.
2) After creating your descriptive list, turn the list into a coherent paragraph similar to the example provided on pages 22 and 23.
3) After completing both the list and the paragraph, write another well-developed paragraph providing an argument for how the mise-en-scene described might be interpreted in relation to the story of the film. You can focus on whatever specific element(s) of the shot you desire – everything included in the image is fair game – but you might also want to think about things such as camera distance, camera angle, and composition. Put simply, how can we interpret meaning out of the shot based on its formal use of mise-en-scene? Cite at least twice from the Sikov reading in order to support your interpretatio
