Sculpture of a Huastec Goddess
Source: British Museum Website.
This is a female figure’s sculpture that is made of sandstone and was carved between 10th and 14th century CE. The sculpture is believed to represent a mother goddess of the people of Huastec who are presently found in Veracruz in Mexico. The goddess was adopted as Tlazolteotl in Maya language a name originating from tlazolli (fifth) and teotl (deity). It was a representation of sexual impurity and any behavior that was considered sinful and the Tlazolteotl was believed to have the ability to tempt and absolve impurities and sins via confession to a priest.
The statue is 6 feet tall and 2 feet wide and 6 inches thick. The carving was done from one stone piece and the carvers utilized basic tools that contributed to the use of the basic straight geometric shapes and lines. Such slab like structures were extremely popular in Huasteca and believed that the female deities had a large following. Among the Huatstec Maya and similar statutes stood in spiritual and communal locations (Susan, Webster and David 106).
There is minimal information on the Maya Huastec, however, it I believed that they were polytheistic people who worshiped nature in a similar manner as the Mesoamerican neighbors and predecessors. The main deities among the Huateca and their predecessors were Tlazolteotl (the goddess of health) and Mixoatl (a deer like supernatural being) (Oxford University 14.Vol.2). Little is known about who the original owners of the goddess because when the Aztec conquered the Huastec region in 14th century, all the objects with the Huatec Nahua language were destroyed. However, the Mayan writings reveal some information regarding the god and give a close relationship from description to the Tlazolteotl (Oxford University 14.Vol.2).The
