Farewell my Concubine
The most compelling aspect of the film Farewell My Concubine is the overwhelming infatuation with theatre, dancing, singing, and fighting. The colors and storyline attract my attention and compel me to learn about Chinese history. The book Farewell My Concubine was written by Lilian Lee and published in 1985. It was adopted into a film by Chien Kaige, the director, in 1993. Notably, the film maintains the scenes in the novel, but the ending depicts that the highlight theme is different between the film and the book.
The film depicts the relationship of two best friends, the star of Peking Chinese Opera. A very harsh Chinese opera master brings together Douzi and Shitou as he believes they are the best students. They develop a strong friendship even after receiving cruel punishments from their master. After some time, the harsh training conditions pay off when the two Douzi (Now Chien Dieyi) and Shitou (now Duan Xiaolou) produce an exquisite performance (English). Throughout the film, the director integrates historical aspects, including the communist takeover and the Japanese invasion of 1937.
The themes of faithfulness and betrayal are well captured in the film. Dieyi and Xiaolou's dedication to opera and the cruel training conditions from their master emphasizes faithful. Even though one would expect them to give up and find other paths in life, they remained committed to singing and acting, producing exquisite performances.
